How to organise your tenancy deposit paperwork

A practical way to bring tenancy, payment, scheme and correspondence records into one clearer starting point.

When a deposit-protection question is unclear, the first useful step is often to bring the available records together. You do not need a complete file before you begin; a simple, honest picture of what you know is enough to start organising the next question.

Start with the core records

  • The tenancy agreement and any move-in pack
  • A record of the deposit payment
  • Scheme certificates, confirmations or deposit information
  • Emails, messages and portal records with the landlord or agent

Put the dates beside the documents

Note the tenancy start and end dates, when the deposit was paid, and any dates shown on protection or related correspondence. Keeping dates together makes it easier to see where the record is clear and where it needs checking.

Use a preliminary check carefully

The Claims Bridge eligibility assessment can help organise what you remember and what records may be relevant. Its result is preliminary; it does not establish a claim or guarantee an outcome.
